What do you do for grammar?

Step 1.

Watch the webinar here. I shared 3 principles of effective sentence-level mini-lessons. The graphic below is from my book Buiding Better Writers.

Step 2.

Decide on a specific sentence feature you want to teach. Here are the slides I created and used with my students. You will recognize Jeff Anderson’s approach with some tweaks. The frame at the bottom of each slide is for co-creating a sentence with the students. Write one together!

Step 3

Offer abundant exposure to the sentence type so that your students get to see it used over and over in various meaningful situations.

For example, on Day 1 you model the sentence, and on Day 2,  students complete Sentence Tiles or Scavenger Hunt. For the Scavenger Hunt, you will need a text that includes the elements you have taught and this slide with directions.
